Building on CMC (completed projects)

Auen & Fawcett Residence Hall Rehabilitations

Overview:

In approximately 90 days, CMC performed more than $9 million in construction upgrades to Auen and Fawcett residence halls--the equivalent of about $100,000 worth of work daily, or--from another mathematical perspective--the construction of a $36.5 million project in a year's time.

LEED Certification:
Although many aspects of the rehabilitations were LEED compliant, such as the inclusion of solar-reflective roofing systems, renovations were not submitted for LEED certification.

Project Team:
La Cañada Design Group; Tovey/Shultz Construction Inc.; gkkworks

Work Performed:

  • Removed all finishes and structure necessary for seismic upgrades to the building superstructure. Structural beams also were added to the frames for increased seismic performance.
  • Replaced all fire detection devices and equipment and relocated fire suppression systems to increase the ability to detect fires and extinguish them.
  • Replaced all of the comfort heating and cooling systems, electrical infrastructure (including the primary feeds to the buildings from new transformers), and data distribution throughout the residences.
  • Upgraded all restrooms, toilet rooms/showers, and lobby/public spaces (study rooms & lounge areas) throughout the residences, including replacing wooden doors and hardware.
  • On building exteriors, roofing systems were replaced with high-performance, single-ply roofing systems that are LEED compliant due to their solar-reflective indexes. All applicable surfaces were also painted, and exterior bricking was cleaned and sealed.

Biszantz Family Tennis Center

Since its dedication in January, 2009, the facility and its tremendous mountain views have become the envy of visiting teams, especially those whose climate is not as temperate as CMC's.

The Biszantz Family Tennis Center will be the site of the 2009 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, May 19-24.

Overview:

This new tennis facility consists of 12 state-of-the-art, post-tensioned concrete tennis courts, plus a clubhouse with a recreation/practice field adjacent to the facility. Construction started in June 2008 and was completed in January 2009. The Center was dedicated Jan. 31.

LEED Certification: None

Project Team: NTD Architects; Perera Construction & Design; gkkworks

Work Included:

  • Excavation and recompaction of approximately 100,000 cubic yards of material from an old landfill.
