2012-2013 RESIDENT ASSISTANT INFORMATION & APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONSJOB DESCRIPTION Please review the following information carefully before applying. The position of Resident Assistant is offered to all full-time CMC students who are entering their final year of study. Normally, this will be juniors who will be seniors next year. Sophomores who are Management-Engineering majors in the 3-2 program may also apply. Because this is a live-in position, students must be enrolled full time through May of 2013. A Resident Assistant (RA) has many responsibilities. In addition to being counselors, they handle administrative tasks, enforce policies, and work to ensure that the CMC community is one where all students can live and learn without unnecessary distractions. They are supervised by Eric Vos, Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Residential Life, and are employed by the Dean of Students Office. Compensation for those selected to be RAs is currently about $23/hr, for 20 hours a week, and is based on room and board; this rate will be adjusted accordingly for the 2012-2013 academic year. All compensation is given during the final two semesters of service. Total compensation is over $13,000. This high rate of compensation is because the job is so instrumental to the life of the College, and it is therefore expected that being an RA will be a priority over other employment and extra-curricular activities. Other activities (including athletics and additional jobs) should be discussed with the Director of Residential Life, and will only be allowed if they do not compromise one's ability to complete one's studies and carry out the role of being an RA. Serving as an RA can be very stressful. Many former RAs have said that they were surprised by the amount of time, training, and awareness that one must dedicate in order to do the job well. The current Resident Assistants will have significant input in the evaluation process. However, final decisions are determined by Dean of Students Mary Spellman, who is responsible for all hiring and employment decisions affecting the Dean of Students Office. Notification of decisions will be mailed on or before February 22nd. Those offered positions will be assigned to a specific residence hall, and will be asked to accept or decline the offer within approximately 48 hours. Those who accept the position will go through an extensive training period during Spring Break, from March 12-18, 2012. There will be an additional training period in the late summer beginning August 16, 2012. The actual term of service begins Sunday, March 18, 2012, at 5:00 pm and ends Sunday, March 24, 2013, at 5:00pm. QUALIFICATIONS We seek applications from students who demonstrate the best overall potential to perform all aspects of the job well. Some of the qualities that we look for include: common sense, intelligence, potential to counsel students, responsibility, maturity, leadership, ability to enforce policies, emotional resilience, sensitivity, evidence of involvement in the College, flexibility, and resourcefulness. Additionally, RAs must be in good academic standing. If you think you possess these skills and traits, we invite you to apply for the RA position.
