Selection Criteria

While there is no single ideal applicant for the Robert Day Scholars Program, and students from all majors are welcome and encouraged to apply in their junior year, it is likely that many of our successful scholars will share a number of qualities. Leadership Potential
Clear indications of leadership potential are expected for admission and can come from a variety of sources. Captains of academic teams and sports teams are both encouraged to apply, as are undergraduates who have taken on leadership responsibilities in other forms, such as through community involvement, volunteer work, or internships.

Academic Background and Test Scores
The Scholars Program is highly selective. The undergraduate Program targets students from all of the Claremont Colleges. The program seeks applicants who have consistently challenged themselves and who demonstrate exceptional quantitative aptitude, as indicated by coursework.

The admission committee also seeks students who demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills, as these are critical for leadership positions. Application essays and prior coursework serve as indicators of writing ability, and small group workshops and alumni interviews help the committee assess oral communication skills.

Personal Qualities
The coursework is rigorous and challenging, and to meet these demands students should be independent thinkers with strong analytical skills. They must be able to work in a professional environment. Moreover, all Robert Day Scholars are expected to demonstrate sound judgment and strong ethics. The admission committee takes a holistic approach to make these determinations, with special emphasis given to the small group exercises and the one-on-one interviews.

Eligibility
All Claremont College juniors are eligible to apply, including those studying off-campus in either or both semesters of their junior year. By applying, all applicants commit to being available to participate in subsequent phases of the selection process if selected to advance.
